Historical repository and documentation for TSCII (Tamil Standard Code for Information Interchange) font encoding.

TSCII (Tamil Standard Code for Information Interchange) was the early 8-bit encoding standard for Tamil digital computing prior to global Unicode adoption. It mapped Tamil characters into the upper 128 byte slots (128–255) of standard ASCII.

History & Significance of the TSCII Standard

Formulated in 1997 by an international open-source group of Tamil software developers and scholars (including INFITT), TSCII was created to resolve font incompatibility on early operating systems (MS-DOS, Windows 95, classic Mac OS, and Unix).

By establishing a uniform 8-bit character mapping specification, TSCII enabled early Tamil news portals, digital libraries, and email groups to exchange Tamil text without requiring proprietary font files.
