Why Use an On-Screen Visual Tamil Keyboard?

While phonetic transliteration is ideal for quick English-to-Tamil typing, a visual on-screen Tamil keyboard is essential for precision writing. When composing formal documents, proofreading Tamil text, entering rare Grantha letters (ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ, க்ஷ), or learning the visual Tamil script, seeing all Tamil characters laid out clearly on your screen eliminates guesswork.

Our visual keyboard works seamlessly with mouse clicks on desktop PCs and direct finger taps on smartphone or tablet touchscreens.

Logical Character Grouping Breakdown

1. Vowels (உயிரெழுத்துக்கள்)

Contains all 12 independent Tamil vowels (அ, ஆ, இ, ஈ, உ, ஊ, எ, ஏ, ஐ, ஒ, ஓ, ஔ) plus the singular Ayutha Ezhuthu (ஃ).

2. Consonants (மெய்யெழுத்துக்கள்)

Displays 18 primary Tamil consonants with Pulli dots (க், ங், ச், ஞ், ட், ண், த், ந், ப், ம், ய், ர், ல், வ், ழ், ள், ற், ன்).

3. Grantha Letters (கிரந்தம்)

Dedicated panel for loan-word characters (ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ, க்ஷ) frequently used in modern names, places, and loanwords.

Forming Combined Uyirmei Characters (உயிர்மெய்)

In Tamil orthography, combining a pure consonant with a vowel sign creates a combined Uyirmei character (216 combinations). Our visual keyboard automatically handles glyph combining:

  1. Click or tap a primary consonant (e.g. க்).
  2. Click or tap a vowel modifier sign (e.g. for ஆ sound).
  3. The editor automatically joins them into the combined character "கா" in standard Unicode!
